The predicted growth of Ashford over the next 20 years presents
a rare opportunity to deliver sustainable communities in new
and exciting ways. The Ashford Discovery Centre will be the
first landmark building to service the needs of this growing
town.

Roger
Preston & Partners has been successful in securing
this commission as part of an OJEC design competition
led by leading architects, Austin-Smith Lord.
The Ashford Discovery Centre will provide information,
advice, support and learning opportunities from cradle
to grave, helping people to help themselves. It will also
become the new home for Ashford Library’s impressive
‘Railway Collection’.
Ashford’s railway heritage and the sleek high-speed
trains that pass on the adjacent railway have inspired
the design. The building is 5,350m2 over 5
floors and has been developed to be energy conscious and
sustainable. Shading analysis, thermal buffer zones, light
and massive construction were considered even at this
early competition stage.
