Waterloo International, London's gateway to Europe is designed to serve 15 million passengers a year and comprises 5 covered 500m long platforms. Customer facilities include booking halls and check-ins, customs and immigration, catering, arrival and departure lounges and car parks, all located below the platforms and utilising the vaults of the original Victorian Station.
A generous provision of lifts, escalators and walkways enables passengers to move easily to and from train platforms.
Services provided include high and low voltage distribution, lighting and small power, heating, cooling, fire detection and alarm, fire fighting, car park management and catering.
Special features include computerised building management, communications networks, a customer information system and a trolley tagging system.
Taking projected customer loads into account, a high
level of environmental comfort was aimed for whilst
recognising the need for minimum energy consumption.
Roger Preston & Partners undertook extensive computer
studies to verify design decisions, some of which utilise
information supplied from a scale model wind tunnel
test.
