Roger Preston and Partners was
appointed to carry out the design of the
building services installation at Heathrow's
Terminal 3 International Departures
Lounge as part of the BAA Framework
Agreement.


The refurbishment works expanded the
existing IDL to cover an area larger than
Webley Stadium but at the same time
keeping all areas operational to minimise
disruption to passengers and staff.
Substantially expanded landside retail and
catering facilities were also included within
the project.

Extension to an existing pier to allow for increased passenger load.

The project included provision of a combined gate room to seat 800 people, aircraft link bridge and apron level accommodation for airline staff

Waterloo International, London's gateway to Europe is designed to serve 15 million passengers a year and comprises 5 covered 500m long platforms. Customer facilities include booking halls and check-ins, customs and immigration, catering, arrival and departure lounges and car parks, all located below the platforms and utilising the vaults of the original Victorian Station.

A generous provision of lifts, escalators and walkways enables passengers to move easily to and from train platforms.

Services provided include high and low voltage distribution, lighting and small power, heating, cooling, fire detection and alarm, fire fighting, car park management and catering.

Special features include computerised building management, communications networks, a customer information system and a trolley tagging system.

Taking projected customer loads into account, a high level of environmental comfort was aimed for whilst recognising the need for minimum energy consumption. Roger Preston & Partners undertook extensive computer studies to verify design decisions, some of which utilise information supplied from a scale model wind tunnel test.
